Can’t find Serial Port on your Computer – Use a USB to Serial Adapter
Posted in Laptop Accessories | 2 Comments »The majorities of new computers have several USB ports, but do not have any serial port. It is likely that you might require serial ports to connect your GPS unit to your laptop or you might require several serial ports for home automation setup. Since new computers only have USB ports, the simple solution to the problem is using a USB to serial adapter. These adapters convert USB ports into serial ports (RS-232). The serial ports in USB to serial port adapter work as normal serial ports and users can connect and utilize these serial port adapters to plug and play serial port devices.
You can connect modems, digital camera, ISDN terminal adapter or many devices that connect through serial port. The USB to serial adapter provides a nine pin male serial port connector on one end and USB on the other. You can attach the serial device to the nine pin serial port connector and plug the usb connector to the computer’s USB port.
Some of the most popular USB to serial adapters available on the market are: Belkin, Keyspan and Prolific usb to serial adapters. Majority of these adapters have nine pin serial connectors.
Keyspan USB to serial adapter: A high speed adapter provides a simple and reliable solution to connect serial device to the USB port on your PC or Mac. The adapter supports data transfer speed of up to 230 Kbps. The adapter is Microsoft WHQL approved and it draws power from the USB port. The LED shows adapter status and data activity. The adapter has a detachable cable and the adapter can be used with any USB cable (up to 5 metres long).
Belkin USB to serial adapter: It is used to connect nine pin serial devices to the USB port. The adapter works with Windows 98SE operating system or higher. It is compatible with USB specification v1.1. The USB to serial adapter supports RS-232 interface and can be used to connect serial devices such as PDAs and joysticks.
Prolific USB to serial adapter cable: It provides connectivity to several serial devices, which include PDAs, digital cameras, GPS satellite receivers and modems. The adapter supports a data transfer rate over 500 Kbps without any setup hassles normally faced in traditional serial port connectivity. The adapter is bus powered and supports automatic hand shake. It works with PC as well as Mac.
Moreover, since the availability of USB ports on laptops is taken as default, lot of companies have come up with the idea of USB toys. More and more usb toys are available in the market for user’s entertainment.
