VoIP router is a combination of a high-speed Internet router and an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) in one piece of hardware. The router functions to forward data packets to the next destination on the network while the ATA adapter is used to connect one or more telephone lines. The ATA adapter in a router enhances the routers capability to connect to standard analog telephone lines, digital phones and non-standard telephone systems such as Voice over IP based networks.
