A computer stores all its programs and data in a hard drive. The hard drive stores all the data even when the computer is turned off. But today, people want to store a lot more information than what their computer can hold. This is where external hard drives are used. A wireless external hard drive holds excess information that your computer can’t hold in its internal hard drive. A wireless network hard drive is also useful as a backup. You can save your music files, movies, images and all other documents here, which can be accessed wirelessly.

Wireless hard drive is also useful when a computer has multiple users, as in case of a personal computer when the whole family uses it. The best part is that its portable and you can carry it around wherever you go. It is easier than carrying a laptop.

Majority of hard drives connect to the computer using the USB port. Other commonly used interface is Firewire. Wireless hard drives, on the other hand are connected to the computer using a wireless link, so that you can access the information stored on it without any physical connection.

Wireless external hard drives have both RAM and ROM memories. Most wireless hard drives have a memory of more than 160 GB. However, with the explosion of the multimedia applications, 1TB wireless hard drive is also not uncommon. The mirrored splattered disks hold the data you store in the drive. The rest of the body of the drive performs other functions such as connecting to the computer.

External hard drives are formatted in two primary forms – high level formatting and low level formatting. The function of low level formatting is to prepare the drive to hold the data while that of high level formatting is to actually write that data onto the memory. The speed of data writing on the hard drive depends on its size and type.
